Wilbur Sprout, 46, rural Maquoketa, was killed Saturday afternoon while operating a backhoe equipped tractor on a neighbor’s farm.

Sprout was operating the tractor on the Dwight Hopson farm, three miles north of Iron Hill when the accident occurred. According to Jackson County Sheriff’s officials, Sprout apparently was getting off the tractor when the rear wheels rolled over him. His body was discovered by his son Michael.

Volunteers from the Jackson County Rescue Squad responded to the emergency call and freed the dead man’s body from the tractor.

Wilbur E. Sprout, 46, of Maquoketa, formerly of LeClaire, was dead on arrival at the Jackson County Public Hospital on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in McGinnis Funeral home, Bettendorf with the Rev. Donnie Prewain of Tremount, Ill. Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in Glendale Cemetery at LeClaire.

Mr. Sprout was born in Galt, Mo., July 13, 1933 to Gerald and Lavon Robertson Sprout. He and Marilyn Johnson were married July 3, 1953.

Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Bonnie Petersen of Wheatland; three sons, Terry, Mark and Michael, all at home; two grandchildren; his parents; a sister, Mrs. Mary Ann Hahn of Bettendorf and three brothers, Gerald and Ronald, both of Galt, Mo., and Roy of Causeland.

He was preceded in death by a daughter.
