Three Farmers Die in Tractor Mishaps

Tractor mishaps claimed the lives of three area farmers in four days.

Monday morning at about 11 a.m. Edward A. Luett, Lost Nation was killed in a tractor accident at his son Edward R. Luett’s farm three miles east of Elwood.

Luett was apparently filling a low spot in front of the barn with a loader equipped tractor. The retired farmer was loading dirt when the tractor flipped over, pinning Luett underneath a wheel.

A Clinton County motor patrol operator, Orval Hinz, Elwood, was flagged down to assist in lifting the tractor from Luett. A neighbor, Wayne Adrian, also aiding efforts to free Luett.

Oxford Junction Ambulance transferred Luett to Jackson County Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival by County Medical Examiner Dr. John Broman. Cause of death was listed as crushing chest injuries.

The funeral for Edward A. Luett, 74, Lost Nation will be held Thursday, Nov. 1 at 1:30 p.m. at the Lost Nation Lutheran Church. Mr. Luett was dead on arrival at the Jackson County Public Hospital on Monday, Oct. 29 after a tractor accident. Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 31 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Carson Funeral Home, Maquoketa.

Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa where the Rev. Bondonna and Rev. Harold Kumpf will officiate.

Edward Luett was born March 15, 1905 in Baldwin to Henry and Eda Wiese Luett. He married Gladys Dalchow on Dec. 15. 1934 in Lost Nation. He was a retired farmer, a member of Izaak Walton League, Buckhorn Community Club, Jackson County Farm Bureau, a board member of the Baldwin savings Bank, member of the board of the Elwood-Lost Nation Telephone Company and a member of the Lost Nation Senior Citizens.

Survivors include his wife, three daughters, June Luett, Nemah, Wis., Mrs. Gayla Jensen, Colorado Springs, Colo., Mrs. Chloe Pahigisanis, Arlington Heights, Ill; three sons, David Luett, Maquoketa, Allen Luett, Miles and Edward R. Luett, Delmar; 14 grandchildren; two brothers, Arnold Luett, Maquoketa and Bruce Luett, Baldwin; three sisters, Mrs. Blanche Currie, Baldwin, Mrs. Dale (Ruth) Flemming, Maquoketa and Mrs. Bernice DeWeeret, Clinton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and a sister.
