Tractor mishaps claimed the lives of three area farmers in four days. Friday afternoon Reno F. Taplin, 76, Preston, Was killed while operating a tractor on his son’s farm northeast of Miles.

Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies said that Taplin was apparently filling in a ditch when the accident occurred. Taplin died of skull fractures when the tractor apparently flipped over on him. Taplin was pronounced dead on arrival by deputy medical examiner Dr. Paul Brown.

The accident was discovered around 5 p.m. Taplin was a retired farmer and had lived in Preston since moving from the family’s farm in 1962.

The funeral for Reno F. Taplin, 76, Preston was held Monday, Oct. 29 at Miller Funeral Home, Preston. Mr. Taplin died Friday, Oct. 26 as the result of a tractor accident while working on the family farm operated by his son, James, 3 miles northeast of Miles. He was dead on arrival at the Jackson County Public Hospital, Maquoketa. Burial was in the Miles Cemetery where the Rev. Hattie Duncan officiated.

Pallbearers were Wilfred Miller, Arnold Ronnefeldt, Mike Feller, Loraine Gray, Paul Papke and Duane Hagge.

Reno Taplin was born June 13, 1903 in Sabula to Jim and Mira Fonger Taplin. He married Margaret Clemme on Dec. 14, 1937 in Preston. The couple farmed near Sabula, moving to Preston in 1962. He was a member of the Preston United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; a son, James, Sabula; two daughters, Mrs. Larry (Elaine) Mommsen, Goose Lake and Mrs. Laureen (Mary) Curtis, Bryant; ten grandchildren, one great-grandchild; a brother, Eldon, Bryant and a sister, Mrs. Mable Bruce, Clinton.

He was preceded in death by a brother.
