Jackson Sentinel, Dec. 4, 1884.

The Last of George N. Barr.

Many of the Sentinel readers will remember George N. Barr, a printer who resided in Maquoketa for a number of years, and was married to Miss Esther Lewis, who survives him. George was at different times connected with all the offices in town as solicitor, reporter and typo. He was a sort of newspaper adventurer and started several short lived papers in this city. His great enemy was a strong appetite for the ardent which wrecked all his undertakings.

He died in Princeton, Illinois, October 24, and the papers of that city published the following:

Capt. George Barr was born in Aurelius, New York and came to Princeton in 1851. In 1861 he enlisted in Capt. Ferris Company of three months men. He re-enlisted in Company D, 57th Illinois Infantry as a Private, was commissioned 1st Lieutenant in 1862, and made Captain in 1863. He served until the close of the war, being mustered out in July 1865. He died at the residence of his father in that city, on the 24th. Sunday morning his remains were taken to Auburn, New York, for interment, accompanied by his mother. The band, military and several of his comrades in the war, escorted the body to the depot.
