An Overdose of Laudanum Causes the Death of Peter Von Eschen.

About 2 a.m., Monday morning, December 1st, Peter Von Eschen, a harness maker in the employ of Geo. Dahling, came to his death by an overdose of laudanum taken after retiring to his bed Sunday night. He had been a resident of Maquoketa for many years, and in his sober moments was a kind father, dutiful husband, always industrious, and of a friendly, good natured spirit. But a strong appetite for drink blighted his whole life. He leaves a widow, who was his second wife, and four grown children by his first wife, one child by the second and five step- children-Adam and Charles Ringlep, Mrs. V. Jacobsen, Mrs. Jake Penrose, and Mrs. Livingston. Deceased was born in Switzerland in 1832 and came to this country many years ago.

The funeral of Mr. Von Eschen occurred from his residence Tuesday afternoon and was largely attended. The Workman lodge of which he was a member took charge of the affair, and marched to Mt. Hope Cemetery, in a body.

The deceased carried a life insurance policy in the Cedar Rapids Mutual Relief Association for $3000 and was also a member of one of the Workman lodges of this city. This will secure to his family the beneficent sum of $5000, and it is fortunate for they are in needy circumstances.
