Obituary

Duane A. Bristol was born in Lewis county, New York, March 20, 1843, and passed away June 16, 1919, aged 76 years, 2 months and 2 days. He lived on a farm with his parents until he was 19 years of age, when he enlisted in August, 1862, in Co. M, 5th New York Heavy Artillery, and served the remaining three years of the war. On May 20, 1866, he was united in marriage to Martha J. McCarty of Watertown, New York. To this union five children was born: Burt J., who passed away March 11, 1907, at the age of 41; Ilona, who died at the age of eight years; Mrs. E. S. Heath, Mrs. J. W. Allen and Edgar R. Bristol all of Monmouth. One brother, A. H. Bristol of Adams Center, N. Y. survives. In December, 1867, they moved to Iowa, coming to Monmouth in 1868, where he has lived continuously for fifty-one years. He was a member of A. T. Hovey Post, G. A. R., also Keystone Lodge, A. F. & A. M., of Wyoming.

His first thoughts were always of his family and almost his last words were inquiring after the welfare of some who had moved away. The funeral was held from the M. E. church Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Jesse M. Smith of Center Junction, assisted by Rev. Parks, officiating. The burial services were conducted by the Masonic order, Dr. W. Bronson delivering the address. Burial was made in the family lot in the Monmouth cemetery.
