July 23, 1918Obituary
Asmus Nicholas William Petersen was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, Dec. 5, 1847. He was baptized in childhood in the Danish Lutheran church and was confirmed in the same faith April 20, 1862. He served his time as a soldier in the Danish army.
He was united in marriage to Miss Anna Jessen April 20, 1872, and this union was blessed with four children, John H. of Maquoketa, Mary Gertrude who died April 3, 1890; Frederick, who died April 10, 1890, and Mamie Frederica Christina Busch of Maquoketa.
He came to America with his family in April, 1882, and located at DeWitt, where he worked on the section for six years. He then worked on the Charles Bloom farm 7 miles south of Maquoketa, then on the Haney farm south of Delmar, then for Marvin Finton; then rented the Calvin Davis farm for six years. In 1903 he bought the Rush Simpson farm west of Maquoketa; where he lived some five years, then sold to his son John and bought the Mericle place just west of town where he lived about five years when his health gave way and he came to live with his daughter, Mrs. Busch, on West Platt street.
Last fall his condition became serious because of a stroke and he was taken to the Becker hospital October 4, 1917, where he was tenderly cared for until early in June when he was taken to the Cottage hospital where he passed away on Monday, July 15 at 6 a.m., aged 70 years, 7 months and 8 days.
He was an honest, hard-working man, a fond father and husband and a good neighbor, ever ready to do his part and more. He was of a deeply religious nature, always at church when health and circumstances permitted. During his long illness his German Bible and song book were his best friends and company. He asked for the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper and received it a number of times during his last illness. It was a great solace to him. He was a patient sufferer and was ready and looking for the day when his heavenly Father would come and take him Home. He has gone to his reward and entered into his eternal rest.
He leaves to mourn his death besides his sorrowing, bereft aged wife, son and daughters, four grandchildren, and a large circle of friends and a few relatives.
Funeral services were held at the home of the daughter, Mrs. Mamie Busch, on West Platt street on Wednesday, July 17, at 1 p.m., and sermon at Buckhorn church at 2 p.m., Rev. D. F. Boomershine officiating.
