Pioneer Woman Called by Death
Aged Maquoketa Resident Passed Away Friday, Funeral Held Sunday.
Interment in Mt. Hope.

Mrs. Marie Nelson, who has been a resident of this city for the past 45 years, passed away Friday morning at her home on North Olive St.

Mrs. Nelson was born in Heils, Denmark, April 22, 1822, and would have celebrated her 96th birthday had she lived until April of this year…

She came to this country in 1873 and directly to Maquoketa.

She had the distinction of being the oldest woman in Maquoketa city and was perhaps the oldest woman in Jackson county.

Mrs. Nelson was a most remarkable woman even in her advanced years she did perfect needlework, kept her home immaculate and retained her mental faculties.

She was blessed with her second eyesight and could read or sew without the aid of glasses.

She is survived by one son, Nels, who made his home with his mother and assisted in caring for her during her last illness, and two daughters, Mrs. Anna Marie Damgaard of Chicago and Mrs. Dora Johansen of Enumclaw, Wash. Eighteen grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the Buchner chapel, Rev. D. F. Boomershine had charge of the services.

Interment was made in Mt. Hope cemetery.
