Joseph Smith

Joseph D. Smith, 80, of Sabula died Saturday in Mercy Hospital, Clinton. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Sabula. The Rev. Robert Reiss officiated and burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Sabula. Law-Jones Funeral Home, Sabula, was in charge. Mr. Smith was born May 7, 1904, in Sabula, to James Henry and Mary Kay Kinder Smith. He married Helen Dennion on May 1, 1949, in Clinton. He was a bridge builder for the Milwaukee Road Railroad for 25 years, retiring in 1969. He was a member of St. Peter’s Church, Sabula American Legion, the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way and was an army veteran of World War 2. Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Lula May Carson of Chicago, Darlene Hartman and Mrs. George (Katherine) Robinson, both of Sabula, Mrs. Ron (Kay) Schroeder of Grand Mound and Mrs. Dennis (Diana) Stuhldryer of Boone; a son, Larry Raymond of Clinton; 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. George (Elizabeth) Robinson of Sabula and Mrs. Marie Giddings of Clinton; and a half brother, Ernest Schneider of Miles.
