W. C. Gregory Passes Away.
Prominent Attorney Dies Early Sunday Morning.
Funeral Services Will be Held This Afternoon.

Walter C. Gregory, one of the most honored and respected citizens of Jackson county, passed away Sunday morning at 12:40 o’clock at his home on Vermont street. Mr. Gregory had been in poor health for many months, but had been confined to his home for only the past several weeks.

He was born December 9, 1844, in Walworth county, Wisconsin, and lived there until he came to Iowa and located in Jackson county. He engaged in agriculture pursuits until the year 1869 when he removed to Andrew which was then the county seat and began reading law with B. F. Thomas.

In 1871 he entered the Auditor’s office as deputy, later serving as deputy clerk. He removed to Maquoketa in May 1875, and was admitted to the bar in 1877. In the same year he was elected to the office of county auditor.

He was married in 1864 to Miss Sarah Bell who preceded him in death many years, passing away in 1886.

The deceased was a man well read, of high mental attainment and strong purpose. He exercised resourceful ability in his business dealings, constantly watchful of opportunity, and never hesitated to take a legitimate step forward, whenever the way was open.

Success came to him as a result of intelligence and well directed efforts.

Thus a long, well spent life has closed. He passed from earth with life’s duties well done, for he was actuated by a spirit of devotion to the tasks which claimed his attention.

His life was one of usefulness and his influence will not soon be forgotten.

He is survived by two sons, Fred. C. and James W., both of this city, and one brother, M. L. Gregory of Aledo, Illinois. Two brothers passed away within the last two years.

A brief prayer will be held at the home at two o’clock with services at the M. E. church at 2:30 o’clock. Rev. C. C. Markham, assisted by Rev. J. J Kidder, will officiate. Interment will be made in the family lot at Mt. Hope cemetery.
