Another Good Woman Called
Mrs. Sarah Wood Nickerson, one of our Early Pioneers is Called by Death.

In the passing of Mrs. Sarah Wood Nickerson, Maquoketa is robbed of another of her pioneer women and highly respected residents. Mrs. Nickerson passed away about 12:20 Thursday morning. She has been bedfast for many weeks at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Keck.

From Mrs. Nickerson, one could learn a lesson of patience. One of the most pronounced characteristics of the American people today is impatience, but from this good woman one could learn their lesson. True she has been made very comfortable but even so it is anything but pleasant to be bedfast for many weeks and especially when the spring months are so alluring and the summer months depressing. But never a word of complaint did she offer.

Sarah Sophia Wood was born in Ticonderoga, N. Y., July 15, 1838. She was but a young woman when she came to Iowa. She was married to T. K. Nickerson, who passed away twenty-two years ago. The Nickersons were among our early settlers. Mr. Nickerson at one time owned a large tract of land on the upper Maquoketa river including the present grounds known as Pinhook.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Nickerson were always liberal contributors to every worthy cause and were at the head of every civic improvement in the early days.

Mrs. Nickerson was a member of the W. C. T. U. and a faithful member of the Congregational church.

She is survived by the following children: Mrs. O. C. Hunter of Charles City; G. C. Nickerson of Portland, Ore.; Mrs. Frank Keck of this city; Mrs. Ed. Glaser of Tobar, Nev.; Mrs. L. B. Carson of this city and Roy A. of Williams, Arizona.

Mrs. Nickerson is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Dan Wilcox, of Sac City, Iowa.
Funeral service will be held from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Keck Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock, Dr. J. G. Morgan officiating. Interment will be made in Mt. Hope cemetery.
