Obituary of Ellsworth Graul

Robert Ellsworth Graul was born at Reading, Pa., in the year 1861. He came with his parents to Jackson county, settling in Maquoketa in the year 1877, where he has made his place of residence ever since. The scenes of his youth and manhood were lived out in this vicinity, from the day of his arrival as a growing boy until as a full grown man, flowering into the increase of years, he passed off the stage of time.

In the year 1885 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Heide, and to this union were born three sons and two daughters, all of whom, save Walter, whose decease occurred in the year 1918, are still living.

Mr. Graul was for many years a successful merchant in our city, having pursued the meat market business. He was always courteous to his customers, and sustained a commendable commercial integrity.

About a year ago Mr. Graul seemed marked for a period of ill health. To the delight of his relatives and friends, however, he regained a measure of strength and was often seen out of doors enjoying the blessings of nature. But his recovery, as time further unfolded its sad pages, was not to be for long. During the last few months he gradually grew worse, and after a hard fought fight, the end came, when in the presence of near relatives and friends, he passed peacefully away at his home Wednesday, March 26, in the 63rd year of his age.

There are left to sustain his loss two sons, Roy and Gene of Maquoketa, two daughters, Edna of Davenport and Lena of Maquoketa; also the beloved wife, three grandchildren, and one brother of Fergus Falls, Minn.

In the year 1921, during a revival meeting held by the present pastor of the Baptist church in this city, Mr. Graul gave himself to the Savior, and came into the fellowship of the church.

The sympathetic love of a host of friends is extended to those who at this time are called upon to mourn the loss of their loved one.

The funeral will be held from the home on Friday at 2 o’clock and from the Baptist church at 2:30, with interment in Mt. Hope cemetery, Rev. L. Elgin Brough officiating.
