OBITUARY
Joseph Beck, oldest child of Joseph and Frances Beck, was born Aug. 25, 1848, in Polo, Bohmeia, and died June 14, 1919, at his home in Baldwin, Ia., aged 70 years, 9 months and 19 days.
About 64 years ago he came to America with his parents and two sisters, Anna and Mary, and located in Maquoketa, Iowa, later moving on a farm near Baldwin where he grew to vigorous manhood. For many years he worked with his father at the wagonmakers' trade and in 1888 he was united in marriage to Miss Teresa Klimo of Onslow, Iowa. To this union were born two sons, Edward and Roy. About 12 years ago he moved to Wilton, Iowa, to follow his trade at that place. Early last fall finding his health was failing and old age creeping on he returned to Baldwin and purchased a little home and settled down near his brothers, Frank and John, and for a few short months enjoyed the compainionship of relatives and old friends. His health failed fast and finally his sister, Mary Martin of Clinton came to care for him and all that she and the brothers and other relatives could do was done to help him and although they could not save him they succeeded in making his end a happy one for he fell into the eternal sleep very peacably and quietly.
We all knew Joe Beck as an honest hard working man and a good neighbor. He suffered much but never complained and is now at rest.
He leaves to mourn his loss the two sons; Edward of Charles City, Iowa, and Roy of Oxford Junction, Iowa and three grandchildren, three brothers, Frank and John of Baldwin, Iowa, and Charlie of St. Louis, Mo.; five sisters, Mrs. Anna Fritz of Marion, Ia.; Mrs. Mary Martin of Clinton, Ia.; Mrs. Emma Widel of Maquoketa, Mrs. Fanny Miles of Clinton and Miss Toney Beck, also of Clinton.
Funeral services were held from the M. E. church at Baldwin June 17 at 10 a.m., the Rev. Edwin Lowe of the Latter Day Saints church officiating, choosing his text, 1 Samuel 16:7. A quartet composed of Mrs. Mollie Lowe, Mrs. Bertha Beiber, Miss Thelma Hoover and Miss Millicent Teeple sang "Abide With Me," and "It is Well With My Soul, " and Mrs. Lowe sang a beautiful solo "O Come Into the Fold." Interment was made in the Pence Cemetery.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs.Edward Beck and son Jack of Charles City; Roy Beck of Oxford Junction, Mrs. Mary Martin of Clinton, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Widel of Maquoketa, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Palmer of Maquoketa, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Widel of Maquoketa, Mr. and Mrs. John Firtz, Jr., of Oxford Junction, Mrs. Henry Zak and daughter Margaret of Marion, Miss Mary Fritz of Marion, Bert and Ralph Beck of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Joseph Snyder of Monmouth.
