Services Are Today

A lifelong resident of Maquoketa, John E. Goodenow, Sr., died on Tuesday, January 16, 1973, at the Jackson County Public Hospital. Mr. Goodenow was 95 years old on January 7.

Funeral services will be held Thursday (today) at 1:30 p.m. at the Haylock O’Hara Funeral Home. The Reverend Russell Fate of the United Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

John E. Goodenow, Sr. was born January 7, 1878 in Maquoketa to Osceola Goodenow and Fannie Cassin Goodenow. He was a retired farmer and stockman. He owned and operated 348 acres located at the southeast edge of Maquoketa and raised registered Shorthorn cattle, Chesterwhite hogs and Shropshire sheep. Mr. Goodenow returned at the age of 78 and moved into Maquoketa. He was a member of the Maquoketa school board from 1922-1933, a city council member in 1934, a member of the Jackson County Farm Bureau, Maquoketa Cemetery Association and held offices in many agricultural and community organizations.

He married Myria King in Maquoketa on January 14, 1909. She survives him as do their two children, Mrs. Raymon (Dorothy) Duer of Sarasota, Florida and John E. Goodenow, Jr. of Maquoketa and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Mr. Goodenow’s father, Osceola, was the first white child born in Jackson County, and his grandfather, John E. Goodenow, was the founder of Maquoketa in 1838 when the population of the state was 23,000. The land for the present Maquoketa Junior High school was donated by the Goodenow family.
