George Zimmer, Bellevue-Barber, Takes Own Life

BELLEVUE – George Zimmer, 52, a barber here for the past 20 years, committed suicide in his home about 7:45 o’clock Wednesday morning by shooting himself in the abdomen.

Dr. John W. Jordan of Maquoketa, Jackson County coroner, was called and he pronounced it a suicide. He said no inquest would be held. Zimmer’s act was attributed to despondency over ill health.

Zimmer shot himself, the coroner said, as he sat on the edge of the bed shortly after he had arisen in the morning, the charge from the shotgun penetrating his abdomen. He had pulled the trigger of the gun with a yard stick. Zimmer’s wife heard the shot and after entering the bedroom, summoned a doctor. The latter said Zimmer had apparently died almost instantly.

No funeral arrangements have been made.

The victim was born in Bellevue on March 23, 1887, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Zimmer. He was married to Susan Till of Bellevue, who survives along with his aged mother, Mrs. Lena Zimmer of Bellevue; three daughters, Mrs. Mike Remakel and Mrs. Carl Slogel of Dubuque, and Mary Catherine at home; one sister, Mrs. John Self, of Sioux Falls, S. D.; and three brothers, Alvin and Sylvester, of Bellevue, and John of Granite
