Sister Irene Frien, OSF

DUBUQUE – The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Sister Irene (Adorine) Frien, OSF, 89, on Wednesday, June 18, in the Mount St. Francis Chapel.

Father Ronald Friedell presided. Sister Irene died Sunday, June 15, at Holy Family Hall in the 73rd year of her religious life.

Irene Winfrieda, daughter of the late Mathias and Elizabeth (Gilles) Frien, was born Sept. 21, 1918, in Stacyville. She was baptized at Visitation Church, Stacyville, and confirmed at St. John Church, Adams, Minn.

She entered the Sisters of St. Francis in Dubuque on Nov. 5, 1934. She was received with the name Sister Adorine on Aug. 12, 1935, and made her first profession of vows on Aug. 10, 1937.

She ministered as a homemaker in the Iowa cities of Dubuque (Sacred Heart and Immaculate Conception Convent), Alton, North Buena Vista, Ossian, Monticello, Holy Cross, Sioux City (Briar Cliff College), Sugar Creek, Petersburg and in Melrose Park, Ill. She spent her last years visiting the elderly in Maquoketa.

She is survived by her brother, John (Flossy); her sisters, Joann and Gertrude (Ed); nieces and nephews; and her Franciscan sisters with whom she shared 72 years of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Frederick (Genevieve); her sisters, Cecilia (John), Mary Ann (Ernest), Stella (Michael), Mildred (Chryst), and Katherine (William); and her brother-in-law, Gene.
