Obituary

Amanda Scott was born near Baldwin, Iowa, April 26th, 1841, and passed away March 15, 1918, at her son’s home. She lived to the good old age of 76 years, 10 months and 19 days. She was united in marriage to John W. Cook April 23, 1857. Three children, two sons and one daughter, were born to them. One son, Willis Cook, Swanville, Minn., survives his mother. Mr. Cook offered himself to his country during the Civil War and died in active service. On September 6, 1866, Mrs. Cook was united in marriage to Ransom Atherton. This union was blessed with three children, Mrs. John Bowman of Lead, S. D., who passed away this winter, Feb. 13; her living southwest of Maquoketa, with whom she made her home until the time of her death, and Charles, living near Wyoming, Ia. Mrs. Atherton was converted and united with the Methodist church when very young. In 1863 she united with the Godard M. E. church and was a member of that church at the time of her death. She loved the church and was faithful to its interests. She lived a consistent Christian life and was loved and respected by her neighbors. She was devoted to her children, who will long cherish the fragrant memories of her beautiful life. She leaves a brother, David Scott of Ridge, Mont., three sons, sixteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and many friends and relatives who will long miss the sunshine of her unselfish life.

Funeral services were held at the Godard church Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. J. Kidder of the M. E. church officiating. Interment took place at the Pence cemetery.
