April 12, 1890Another Worthy Pioneer Gone.
Last Sunday afternoon the Baptist Church was crowded at the funeral services for Wm. H. Paris, when Rev. R. J. Langridge preached on 2 Peter, 1:14. Mr. Paris has been a worthy member of the church and a highly esteemed citizen for a number of years. He was born Jan. 2, 1811, in the State of New Jersey, and when quite young made a profession of religion and joined a Baptist Church. At the age of 30 years he removed to Ohio, and in the year 1842 he was married to Martha Woodruff with whom he lived nearly 50 years as a faithful and devoted husband. In 1853 he came to Iowa, and was one of a noble band of pioneers that settled near where now is located the town of Elwood, and experienced the varied circumstances of such early times. In the fall of 1869 he sold his farm and removed to Maquoketa, in which city he resided until he was suddenly removed on Wednesday evening, April 2, to the rest of the heavenly home.
Though he was a great sufferer from rheumatism for many years, yet he was a cheerful, consistent Christian, and all who knew him highly respected his character. An obliging neighbor and a true friend, his removal will be long felt. He leaves to mourn their loss an estimable widow, two daughters and their husbands and one son, and several grandchildren. Mrs. Paris leaves shortly to live with her daughters. May her days be peaceful.
