DIED.

At Bellevue, on the 29th inst., ANSON HARRINGTON.

With what startling solemnity did this announcement fall upon the citizens of Jackson county. Prepared as we are to see the debauchee and inebriate stricken down by the fearful destroyer that is in our midst, it is as unexpected as it is melancholy, to see him grasp in his deadly embrace, our most temperate and estimable citizens.

To a circle of relations and personal friends Mr. Harrington’s death is a bereavement; to the community at large, a deep and almost irreparable loss. To the young, particularly, were his precepts and example of infinite value. A man of deep research and profound thought, he seldom expressed an opinion which was not the result of mature consideration; and though his advice to the gay and thoughtless, sometimes assumed the tone of admonition, it was so truthful that even the subject of it, were forced to admit its justness.

The subject of education engaged a large share of his attention, and having been a successful teacher, his knowledge of the requirements and details of the school room were practical and useful.

He entertained enlarged and liberal views in religious matters, was a Unitarian and a passionate admirer of the character and writings of Dr. Channing; and in that trying moment when he felt that his soul was about “to shuffle off its mortal coil” and pass “to that bourne from whence no traveler returns” his convictions remained the same, and his calmness unshaken.

His determined energy in accomplishment of his purposes, procured him enemies, but all who knew him will now acknowledge his worth and feel his loss. S.
