January 26, 1974John Wherry Dies in Auto Crash
A Maquoketa man, home on leave from the U. S. Navy, became the county’s second victim of a fatal auto accident Thursday, Jan. 24, after a one-car accident two miles east of Maquoketa.
John Decker Wherry, 22 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wherry of Bellevue, died at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque Thursday afternoon, where he was transferred after being taken to Jackson County Public Hospital.
According to Trooper Ken Kramer, the investigating officer, Wherry was westbound on Highway 64 when the accident occurred.
Kramer said the car crossed the highway with a light skid, traveled 100 feet on the south shoulder before it hit the driveway leading to the Henry Daehler home.
The car left the ground and went 95 feet in the air, when it landed it bounced another 25 feet before coming to rest on its top.
Wherry was thrown from the car and the accident was reported by a passing motorist shortly after it happened.
Kramer set the time of the accident at 10:30 a.m.At press time funeral services for John Wherry were pending at Carson’s Funeral Home.
