Obituary

Mrs. Mary Longman, daughter of Ashford and Elizabeth Saxton, was born June 15, 1845, in Ohio, where a family of eight children, four sons and four daughters, grew to adult life.

The family moved from Ohio to Indiana then to Missouri and then in the days of the Civil war to Illinois where Mary Paxton was united in marriage to Ilias Longman at the close of the war. About forty years ago Mr. and Mrs. Longman took up their residence in Delmar, Iowa.

Seven children born to them grew to manhood and womanhood, three sons, John and William Longman, Rockford; Charles Longman, Maquoketa, and four daughters, Mrs. Shenkle, Mrs. Tillie Gillogly, Mrs. Grace Gillogly of Spokane, Wash., and Mrs. Cassie Dale of Rockford.

The family moved from Delmar to Maquoketa about 1880. Mr. Longman died in 1904. Mrs. Longman continued to live in this town for about seven years with a daughter and two sons. Some years were spent in Spokane, Wash., after which she moved to Rockford, Ill.

Mrs. Longman was usually connected with some Christian organization, believing as she did in the teachings of the Bible. In May, 1920, paralysis made her an invalid. Two strokes since then, the last one occurring a few days ago, brought the earthly life to its close.

Mrs. Longman leaves two sisters, Mrs. Tillie Wilson, Mt. Carroll, Ill., and Mrs. Jim Powers, Oelwein, Ia., and two brothers, William Saxton, of Springfield, Mo., and John Saxton of Seattle, Wash.

The funeral services conducted by Rev. Edward A. Lang, pastor of the Methodist church, were held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Longman on Walnut street, Maquoketa, Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 20, at 2 o’clock. Mrs. Blake and Miss Sharp rendered appropriate songs. Burial took place in Mt. Hope cemetery
