Obituary

ANDREW – Funeral services were held at St. John’s Catholic church on Friday, April 4, at 9:30 o’clock in the morning for Mrs. Mary O’Neil. Rev. J. G. Schmitz, pastor, officiated at the requiem high mass. Burial was made in the Catholic cemetery.

Mary Ann O’Neil, daughter of James and Maria Taylor, was born at New Castle, Penn., June 16, 1849, and passed away April 1, at the age of 91 years, 8 months and 16 days. At an early age she came with her parents to live on a farm near Spragueville. Here she grew to womanhood.

After her marriage to William O’Neil they resided for many years on a farm east of Andrew. To this union three children were born; her husband, one son and a daughter preceded her in death. Twenty-three years ago she moved to Andrew where she continued to reside until this fall. Because of her failing health she went to Rock Island to spend the winter months with her granddaughter. Mrs. Herman Schladt and was looking forward to coming home about April 1st. On March 27 she fractured her hip and was taken to St. Anthony’s hospital in Rock Island, where her condition, owing to her advanced age, became gradually worse and at 10:30 o’clock Tuesday morning death came to relieve her suffering. She leaves to mourn her passing, one daughter, Mrs. Sarah Andrews of Rock Island; 16 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and 13 great great grandchildren.

Mrs. O’Neil, one of the oldest residents of this community, was the widow of a Civil war veteran and was a faithful attendant at the Memorial Day services as long as her health permitted. The home where she resided was at one time owned by Iowa’s first governor, the late Ansel Briggs.

She will be greatly missed in our midst, as her kind disposition and friendly greeting endeared her to both old and young. She had a wonderful memory and often related interesting events in the early history of our community. Her interest also centered on present day affairs of both state and nation. Reading the daily papers and conversing with friends on the latest topics of the day proved a great pastime.

In the year 1916 Mrs. O’Neil joined the Catholic church where she remained a faithful member and passed away comforted by the last rites of her religion.
