Christmas week has brought its tragedies as well as its pleasures to this community.
On Thursday morning Calvin was found in the woodshed by his wife hanging by the neck dead, by his own hand. He seemed in his usual frame of mind and there was nothing to indicate his intentions, and no one dreamed that he had such action in contemplation. He arose that morning as usual, went to the woodshed, adjusted a clothes rope about his neck and swung himself off from a step into eternity. He was an old soldier and leaves a wife and four daughters in sorrow. The funeral occurred Saturday with interment in Mt. Hope cemetery, Rev. T. A. Foster conducting the services. His comrades in arms attend and paid their final respects to their dead.
Calvin Wilcox was born August 14th, 1846 in the county of Middlesex, province of Ontario, Canada, and came with his parents to Clinton County, Iowa, in the year 1855, where he continued to reside up to the year 1870, when he became a resident of Jackson county, Iowa, where he had continued to reside up to the date of his death, Dec. 26, 1907.
He enlisted in Company G, 52nd regiment, Illinois Infantry Volunteers in January 1864 and was honorably discharged July 6, 1865.
He was married to Flora M. Boyce September 16, 1875, and to this union eight children were born, four of whom, Mrs. Cora Benadom, Mrs. Rosa Ellis, Minnie Wilcox and Hattie D. Wilcox, with his widow survive him. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Mary A. Prindle, Mrs. Martha Van Emburgh and Mrs. Laura J. Nims, all of Maquoketa; and by three brothers; D. M. Wilcox, Ottumwa, Iowa. Thomas Wilcox, Bedford, Iowa and Peter Wilcox, Lake City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held in the Methodist church Saturday afternoon December 28, 1907, Rev. A. T. Foster officiating.
Burial services were conducted by the G. A. R. Post of Maquoketa.
