A STURDY PIONEER GONE.
Royal L. Goodenow Passes Away
Aged 91 Years – A Man of Affluence

Royal L. Goodenow was born in New York, Jan. 27, 1820, and died at his late home on South Summit street, Sunday evening, March 19th, at the advanced age of 91 years, 1 month and 24 days. He came to Iowa in the year of 1845 and located on a farm in Clinton county. He purchased this quarter section and lived there for close to thirty-five years with his wife, Sarah Sherwood, with whom he united in marriage in the year 1856. In addition to cultivating grain he also engaged in raising good grades of stock and both branches of his business brought him gratifying financial returns. After retiring from the agricultural life he removed his family to Wall Lake, Iowa, where he engaged in the banking business and resided for over fifteen years, when he returned to Maquoketa and purchased the Alex Organ property on So. Summit street, where he has since resided. His has been the life of the industrious, thrifty and progressive agriculturist, and the success which he achieved has been gained along legitimate lines of business and not at the expense of another’s misfortune and hence contained no element of bitterness but rather commanded the admiration of his fellow citizen. His interest in public projects were of a beneficial character and have been far reaching and effective in the support of projects for general improvement. He is survived by a wife, three sons, M. B. of Burwell, Nebr., Charles of Wall Lake, and Bert of Dupree, S. D., two daughters, Mrs. D. H. Phillips and Mrs. H. O. Butterworth, both of this city, also one brother, Phineas residing in Capay, Cal., and one sister, Mrs. Cynthia Fitch of this city.

Funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the late home, Rev. D. F. Boomershine officiating, and interment will be made in Mt. Hope cemetery.
