TOMPKINS – Walter Noran Tompkins was born in Maquoketa, Iowa, May 13, 1894. When a little boy at play he received an injury which caused a lameness in the hip from which he never fully recovered. He could never join in the youthful sports of his companions, yet he enjoyed the games as best he could by watching them. He went to school when health permitted and sold papers when able to be around at all. He had the sympathy of all who saw him in his affliction and because of his courteous manners, encouraged him in his efforts to help himself. He became a great sufferer the last few years but bore it all without a murmur ever hoping and expecting to get well and strong again. When he found he could not recover, he soon became reconciled and by the faithful ministrations of the family, his last days were made as pleasant as possible. When the end came, with a smile he said he was going to the green pastures and still waters to be at rest of which his sister and mother had told him so much about. His life was a battle and a victory through Jesus Christ and his death was triumphant which is certainly a great comfort and consultation to the sorrowing family. He passed away Tuesday, March 7th, at 8:30 a.m. aged 16 years, 9 months and 21 days. He leaves to mourn his early departure the sorrowing parents, one sister, Mrs. Millie Eberhardt and three brothers, John of Clinton, George and William of Maquoketa, and a large circle of friends.

Funeral services were held from the home of the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Amasa Tompkins on East Apple St. on Thursday, March 9th at 2 p.m. and sermon at the M. E. church. The quartette composed of Mrs. James Campbell, Mrs. D. F. Boomershine, Jerry Blake and Dean Hamley, sang sweet and consoling hymns in the church and at the grave. Burial in Mt. Hope cemetery, Rev. D. F. Boomershine, assisted by Rev. Cook, officiating.
