Obituary of Mrs. Henry Atzen

Anna Lucile, daughter of Hans and Anna Lucille Hansen was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, April 29, 1863. She came to America with her parents when five years of age and settled in Scott county, Iowa. Seven years later the family moved to the vicinity of DeWitt where she grew to young womanhood.

She was united in marriage to Mr. August Bliedhorn in the early spring of 1881 and became the happy mother of three children. Mrs. Dora James of Martel, Iowa, Hans Bliedhorn who died February, 1924, and Otto Bliedhorn of Muscatine, Iowa. Her husband died November, 1893.

She was united in marriage to Mr. Henry C. Atzen on January 3, 1895, and to this union four children were born, a son who died in infancy, Minnie W. Atzen at home, Mrs. Hilda H. Widel of near Maquoketa and Earl who died in infancy.

She lived on a farm nine miles south of Maquoketa until she moved to Maquoketa March 20, 1906, where she has since resided on South Matteson Avenue.

Mrs. Atzen was a devoted and faithful wife and mother to five children and a step mother to four children, all of whom she reared in one home with credit to herself and profit to the children, all of whom rise up and call her blessed.

She was a true friend and good neighbor and enjoyed the fellowship of her many friends during her shut in days the last few years.

She was baptized in infancy in the Lutheran faith and on July 4, 1926, she made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ and was confirmed a member of the Reformed church of Maquoketa which fellowship she enjoyed so much. The sacrament of the Lord’s supper was a joy and feast to her.

She was a member of Women’s Relief Corps for twenty years and enjoyed the meetings and work of the order so long as she was able to do her part and she was ever ready to answer the call for help or lend a helping hand where ever needed.

Mrs. Atzen was a strong healthy woman until about ten years ago when a diabetic condition developed and became acute three years ago which necessitated an operation in January, 1925. She was able to be up and round most of the time since then. Monday, August 1, she was taken seriously ill and later in the week the trouble seemed to be under control when suddenly on Saturday, August 6th at 6:30 in the morning her heart stopped and her soul left to be with Jesus and loved ones gone before, at the age of 64 years, 3 months and 7 days.

She has entered into rest and gone to her eternal home. Beside the sorrowing husband and children, thirty-one grand children, three brothers, John Hansen of Grand Mound, Jacob Hansen of McCausland and Harry Hansen of Davenport, and six sisters, Mrs. Mary Kelting and Mrs. Lena Sackett of Davenport, Mrs. Katherine McNall of Muscatine, Mrs. Emma Garinzen of Sabula, Mrs. Hannah Truelsen of DeWitt and Mrs. Vera Shippy of Nisland South Dakota. Also four step children as follows: John M. Atzen of Lime Spring, Ia., Mrs. Anna Schmidt of Cresco, Ia., Harry Atzen on home farm and Karl Edward Atzen of Davenport, and a large circle of friends to mourn her departure.
