MU1-C J. F. Smola Dies at Great Lakes

Funeral services were held in the Carson funeral home Thursday at 2 p.m. for MU 1-c Joseph F. Smola, 39, a former Maquoketan who died Sunday at Great Lakes, Ill.

Interment was made in Mt. Hope cemetery. Smola, a musician in the U.S. navy, was born Apr. 22, 1916, in Maquoketa, a son of W. F. and Ethyle Taylor Smola. He was a graduate of Maquoketa high school and played in the public schools band for eight years.

He enlisted in the navy on June 12, 1937. Since August of 1954 he has been stationed at Great Lakes, Ill., naval training center. He attained the rank of musician first class. On Sept. 29, 1947, he married Mary Arlee Bradwell, who survives him.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Ethyle Smola; a brother, John Smola; and a sister, Mrs. Fred E. (Helen) Clary. His father died July 4, 1954.
