Opal B. Engel, 88 of Maquoketa, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 1993 at Jackson County Public Hospital in Maquoketa.

The funeral was held at 2 p.m., Monday, Aug. 30 from W. G. Carson & Son Funeral Home in Maquoketa with the Rev. Shelly Nordine of Oxford Junction United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Esgate Cemetery, rural Maquoketa.

Visitation was from 1 p.m. to service time at the funeral home. Memorials are preferred.

Mrs. Engel was born Jan. 29, 1905 in Jackson County to Marion and Mary Shields Hayward. She married Albert Engel on Sept. 6, 1927 in Maquoketa.

She was a homemaker as well as a housekeeper at Jackson County Public Hospital for six years.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Darleen (Mrs. Edward) Straka of Oxford Junction; one son, Marlin Engel of Bakersfield, Calif.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one brother, Walter Hayward of Maquoketa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son in infancy, one grandson, one brother, and two sisters, one of whom, Elsie Weigel, died July 13, 1993.
