Richard Lewis was born in Reading, Pa., June 1838 and died suddenly on Saturday evening in Maquoketa, November 9, 1907 aged 69 years, 4 months and 21 days. He was married to Salinda Graul in the Lutheran church, Reading, Pa, October 26, 1861. He enlisted in the Army on the 24th of September 1861, in Durell’s Battery and served three years, the full term of his enlistment, and was honorably discharged on the 4th day of October 1864. He saw much active service and took part in the battles of Fredricksburg, Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fairfax, Courthouse and a number of smaller engagements. He was a boiler maker by trade and lived in Reading, Scranton Pa., and in Elmyra N. Y. in which places he worked at his trade. He came with his wife to Maquoketa in the early eighties where he has since resided. He was a kind husband and a man of genial temperament. He leaves to mourn his sudden departure, his faithful wife and lifelong companion, and a large circle of acquaintances.
Funeral services were held in the Reformed church at 2 p.m. today and burial in Mt. Hope cemetery, Rev. D. F. Boomershine officiating.
