Jackson Sentinel, October 6, 1898:
John Glaser, a shoemaker by trade and a resident of the Second Ward, died at his home Saturday evening after an illness of two weeks, caused by a failure to partake in nourishment. In January last he was taken to the state asylum at Independence, but his physical and mental condition showing no improvement, he was brought home last month. His family did all in their power to make his closing days pleasant and peaceful. He was born in Widenburg, Germany, June 20, 1845, and when 24 years of age came from his native land direct to Maquoketa. A wife, three boys and two girls, besides three brothers, Jacob, George and Louis Glaser, also half-brother and two half-sisters, J.C.Glaser, Mrs. Charles Voelkers and Mrs. Henry Chocker. The funeral occurred at the home Tuesday afternoon and the remains were interred in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
