Maquoketa Community Press, January 6, 1949:
Eugene Graul, 54, Dies Suddenly.
Eugene Graul, 54, lifelong resident of Maquoketa and a postal employee for 23 years until his retirement five years ago, died suddenly at his home Monday morning, January 3rd. He had been in failing health for some time.
Funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon, January 6th, at 2:00 p.m. in the Methodist Church. The Rev. M.M.Powers will officiate and burial will be in Mt. Hope.
Born March 5, 1894 in Maquoketa, the son of the late Elfe and Mary Heide Graul, he was married December 28, 1918, to Letha Mertz. He was a veteran of World War I, a member of the American Legion, the Masons, Knights of Templar and Isaac Walton League. The American Legion will assist with funeral services.
In addition to his wife, the deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs. James Longstreet, Plainville, Connecticut, a student at Yellow Springs, Ohio; one son Paul, a student at the State University of Iowa; two sisters, Edna of Davenport, and Mrs. Alfred Holtz of Maquoketa. His parents and two brothers, Roy and Walter preceded him in death.
