Maquoketa Community Press, April 14, 1949:
John Witzigman, Prominent Civic, 4 H Club Leader. Dies.
Miles, April 13-John Witzigman, 69, cashier of the Miles Savings Bank, and a prominent civic and 4 H Club leader, died at 12:50 P.M., Saturday in Jane Lamb Hospital, Clinton. Mr. Witzigman had been in poor health for some time.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2:00 P.M. in the home of Miss Theodora Hemingway, Clinton. The Rev. Forrest G. Clark, pastor of the Miles Methodist Church officiated, assisted by Dr. Bruce McCullough, pastor of the Clinton First Presbyterian Church. Burial was made in Springdale Cemetery. Rose Croix services were conducted.
He was born in Clinton, Jan. 23, 1880, the son of Frank and Caroline Luktart Witzigman. He married Ruby Hemingway July 16, 1918 in Clinton.
Mr. Witzigman was a member of the Blue Lodge A.F. and A.M. the consistory, Clinton, the Miles I.O.O.F. lodge, and the Miles Methodist Church. He was church treasurer and member of the board. He is survived by his wife; one brother, the Rev. F.C.Witzigman, Waterloo; one sister, Mrs. E.R.Bowen, of Glenview, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. Three bothers preceded him in death.
Ever since the Miles 4 H Club began staging its baby beef show in 1923 Mr. Witzigman had taken an active interest in helping to perpetuate the event by sustaining the 4 H boys interest in the scientific breeding and feeding of cattle. Although he remained in the background in recent years, he furnished much of the inspiration for his annual show, one of the most outstanding club events in the Middle West.
