Charles Alton Dies In Sabula; Rites Saturday.
Sabula, April 2-Charles Henry Alton, 75, of Sabula, died suddenly at 9:30 a.m., Thursday in his home.
Mr. Alton was born Mar. 11, 1878, near Sabula, to the late William and Mary Alton. He was educated in Sabula schools. At the age of 15 he went to Colorado, where he worked on a ranch near Platteville for four years. In 1900 he enlisted in the regular army, serving under Gen. Duncan MacArthur, during the insurrection in Luzon, Philippine Islands. He was sent to China during the Boxer Rebellion and returned to the Philippines for fighting against native guerillas. He was discharged in 1903 with Samar Expedition and Chinese Relief Expedition medals.
On April 18, 1949, he was made an honorary member of Mississippi Post, American Legion of Sabula.
He was married March 28, 1907, to Essie Blenner and spent the remainder of his life in the community. He was employed as a carpenter until his retirement.
Surviving are the widow, two daughters, Mrs. George(Lila)Case of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Clarence(Margaret)Peters, Sabula, three grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Anna Griffin, Vancouver, Washington.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday in Calvary Lutheran Church, Rev. Phillip Mueller officiating. Mrs. Tilbert Hattebery sang appropriate hymns. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.
