Maquoketa Record, March 10, 1908:
Confederate Civil War Veteran William Phillips Dies.
On Tuesday morning last, William Phillips, "Uncle William" as he was known to everyone hereabouts, died at his home three miles south of this city, from infirmities incident to advanced age.
Mr. Phillips was born in Augusta County, Virginia, June 1, 1819. He married Hannah Shaver of Rockingham County, Virginia, in 1841 and lived in happy union with her for sixty-one years until separated by her death July 9, 1902. Residing in the South he cast his destiny with the Confederacy in the Civil War and served as a brave soldier until its close. In 1868 he removed to Iowa with his family and settled on a farm south of this city where he has since resided and reared his family. His children are J.E. Phillips, D.H. Phillips, Mrs. Lizzie Guyer of Lost Nation, Mrs. Cornelia Randman of Delmar and Margaret Jane Dever now deceased, but who left a family of grandchildren of the subject of this sketch. The funeral occurred at the Union Church and was largely attended, interment in the cemetery there., Rev. D.F. Boomershine officiating.
The deceased was ever held in the highest esteem by neighbors and friends, having a reputation for sterling integrity and honesty throughout an honorable and useful life. He accumulated considerable property and has made what is termed a success. Many are they who regret that the reopened sheaf is gathered home.
