Maquoketa Record, October 3, 1906:
William Burleson was born in Troy, New York, on the 4th day of June, 1827, and at the time of his demise, which occurred in this place on the 16th inst, was aged 79 years, 3 months and 12 days. When but a boy of 10 years he moved with his parents to Jackson County, Iowa, where they engaged in farming and where upon the old homestead the deceased resided continuously for 66 years. On March 17th, 1850, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Ann Mallard, five children being the result of their union, and for six years past the half century mark has the kind husband and loving wife journeyed happily down the stream of life together. Early in the spring of 1903 he disposed of the "old farm", and accompanied by his family came west and located in Mokelumne Hill, one of his sons, Charles Burleson, being a resident of this place, in order that his declining years might be passed surrounded by those who were so near and dear to him, but the Supreme Architect has ruled otherwise. He purchased what is known as the Gardella vineyard, about a quarter of a mile from town, which he has not only greatly improved during the past three years, but upon which he built a nice quiet and cozy country home and at which his death occurred.
Funeral services were held from his residence on Tuesday afternoon last, Rev. Wm. Tuton, of Jackson officiating, and the floral tributes were many and were appropriate. The pall bearers were Messrs. F.O.Cortmarsh, H.R.Greve, S. Gobbi, E.E.Burce, Geo. Steffen and John Champion, and appropriate hymns were rendered by a choir composed of Mrs. C.F.Burce, Misses Flossie Kean and Etta Krim and Messrs. C.F.Burce and F.P.McOarty. The long funeral cortege slowly made its way to the silent City of the Dead where mortal remains of a true and nobel man were consigned to Mother Earth with impressive ceremonies.
The deceased leaves to mourn his loss, a bereaved wife, one brother, F.V.Burleson, and one sister, Mrs. Emily Denniston, both of Maquoketa, Iowa, one daughter, Ela F. Parady and three sons, Charles M., Martin O. and Frank D., all of this place.
