Maquoketa Record, July 25, 1906:
Michael Pierce died on Saturday last at his home, eight miles north-west of this city, and was buried Monday in the Sutton graveyard near his home. Mr. Pierce was an old soldier having belonged to the famous Second Iowa Cavalry during the war(Civil War) and made a splendid record as a soldier. As a citizen he was respected by all who knew him and the world is better that he has lived. His funeral was in charge of A.W.Drips post(Grand Army of the Republic), of which he had long been a member.
