Maquoketa Record, August 1, 1906:
Lavinia Liston was born in Perry County, Ohio, Feb. 24, 1933, and came to Iowa in 1851, and located near the Esgate School House. She was united in marriage Dec. 12, 1855, to Elijah Roush, with whom she lived over forty-five years of happy wedlock, until his death in 1901. She was the happy mother of four children, three sons and a daughter: Hiram who died about eight years ago, Isiah who died at the age of two years, and one son who died in infancy, while only the daughter, Mrs. A. Turner, and four grandchildren, survive to mourn the loss of a kind loving mother and grandma. She lived all her married life in the Esgate community, except the two years she and her husband lived in Maquoketa, where he died. She made a profession of religion in young womanhood and united with the M.E.Church. She was a kind woman and neighbor, and a fond wife and mother. All who knew her loved and admired her. Her work is done and she has gone to her reward. She was well as usual on Tuesday morning and was stricken down with paralysis and died in a short time without gaining consciousness. The funeral services were held at the Esgate School House at 10:00 a.m., Thursday and burial took place at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Rev. D.F.Boomershine officiating.
