Maquoketa Record, August 1, 1906:
Herbert Lee Nims, son of John Wesley and Laura Jane Nims, was born Sept. 18, 1884, on the homestead three miles east of Maquoketa, and grew to manhood in this vicinity. He spent last summer in Wyoming and Montana looking for a location suitable for his abilities. He came home last winter and in the early spring again went west, this time to Minot, North Dakota, where he took up a claim, where he was at the time of his death, proving up. On Saturday evening, July 21st, on returning from his work, in crossing the railroad tracks he was caught between two cars and crushed so that he died next morning at 6 o'clock, aged 21 years, 10 months, and 4 days. His last message to Mother was "Tell Mother I love her and I die happy." The remains reached here Wednesday morning and funeral services were held at the late home on Thursday at 3 p.m., where a large circle of friends gathered to show their sympathy to the sorrowing father and mother and brothers and sisters. There was a beautiful and elaborate floral offering by the many friends. At the grave in Bridgeport Cemetery the I.O.O.F. had charge of the service, of which order he became an active member last March. Rev. Boomershine officiating.
