MAQUOKETA — Frances I. Cornelius, 85, of Maquoketa, died Friday at Oregon (Wis.) Manor Nursing Home.

Burial will be in Andrew Cemetery.

She was born Oct. 9, 1921, in Jackson County to Scott and Ella Janssen Wylie. She married Wilbur L. “Wib” Cornelius on July 12, 1943, in Maquoketa. He died in 2002.

She attended Jackson County rural schools and graduated from Maquoketa High School and Maquoketa Junior College.

She was a homemaker. In her early years, she taught school. During World War II, she worked in support of the war effort in the Chicago area.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church, the church’s choir, Meals on Wheels and was a 50-year member of the Tuesday Club. She also was active leader of the Girl Scouts of America Organization.

Survivors include three daughters, Cathryn McDevitt of Massena, N.Y., Peggy (Jeffrey) Williams of Florissant, Mo., and Patricia (Craig) Bloyer of Stoughton, Wis.; one son, Dr. Clifford (Carole) Cornelius of Tucson, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; one sister, Grace Ehlers of Maquoketa; and one sister-in-law, Marjorie Cornelius of Maquoketa.

Memorials may be given to First Lutheran Church, the Jackson County Historical Society or American Cancer Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and one grandchild.
