Peter Burns, a highly respected citizen of Maquoketa died Thursday morning at 8:15 at the home of his daughter Mrs. F.W. Moffatt, aged 86 years, after an illness of four months from a complication of diseases.
Mr. Burns was born in this country in 1820, but went to Ireland when 12 years old, with his parents, where he lived for ten years and in that time learned to love the Emerald Isle so well, that it was his one regret when dying that Ireland's people were not yet free. On returning to America he located in Brooklyn, and there married Miss Margaret McNulty, who preceded him to the Great Beyond about four years ago. Seven children survive to mourn the loss of a loving father: Mrs. S.B.Mallory and Mrs. J.J.Miller of Darlington, Wisconsin, Mrs. Kathryn Kane of Omaha, Nebraska, Mrs. F.W.Moffatt of this city, Peter Burns of Anamosa, John of South Dakota, and William of Prairieburg, Iowa. Mrs. James Hayes and Mrs. P. Grady, both of whom were residents of Maquoketa, while living, preceded him to the grave. J.P.Burns of Anamosa and Pete Grady of Marion, grandsons, were in attendance at the funeral.
During Mr. Burns long illness loving children surounded him with every comfort within their power, and done all that could be done to make his last moments on earth happy.
The funeral was held Saturday morning at 9 o'clock, at the Sacred Heart Church, Rev. J.F.Bowen celebrating Requiem Mass. Burial in the Catholic Cemetery.
