Gilmore---Samuel Gilmore, son of John and Jane Wyrick Gilmore, was born in Pennsylvania, Dec. 24, 1832, and passed away at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Will Huston of Emeline on August 21, 1914.He, with his parents, brothers and sisters, came to Iowa when he was a young man. Soon after arriving in Iowa he was married to Mary Sawyer. To this union three children were born. Two grew to maturity, James, who was in Canada when last heard from, and Mrs. Joel Rainer of Canton, Ia. Mrs. Hiram Kiester, the only remaining member of the father's family, has been spared to comfort him in his last sickness, which was indeed very grievous, but which he endured in Christian fortitude.
Brother Gillmore heard his country's call for services in the '60's and responded. He was a volunteer in the 6th Iowa Cavalry which did valiant service on the frontiers in keeping the Indians within bounds. Thus, while not in any of the great battles of the war, he did as important a service in protecting our frontier homes from the ravages of the Indians. He was converted when a young man and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, in which faith he lived and died. He was ever ready to respond to his Lord's call for any service, no matter how great.
All of his life was spent near Canton except 17 years' residence in Dickinson county, Iowa. Besides the relatives mentioned there remain to mourn his going 12 grandchildren a number of nephews and nieces, besides other friends who feel that one has gone who wil be sadly missed. He was aged 81 years and 8 months.
