J. S. DICE PASSES AWAY AFTER ILLNESS OF SEVERAL MONTHS
Death claimed another of our old and respected residents Tuesday evening when J. S. Dice passed away at his home on West Platt street, death following an illness of several months. In his younger years Mr. Dice engaged in farming and his success in his chosen calling wa largely due to his sraightforward dealings and ambitious temperament. He loved progress and was always an advocate of higher standards of living and doing things and it is just such citizenship as this that has brought about such great results in community work. A kind husband, a devoted father and a loyal friend has been taken from our midst and while his loss is keenly felt, there comes that comforing thought that is is far better that he has lived.
John Samuel Dice was born in Rockingham, Virginia, Sept. 6, 1846 and passed away at his home on West Platt street, August 18, 1925, aged 78 years, 11 months and 13 days.
At the age of 17 he joined the Confederate army where he remained until the close of the Civil war.
In June 1872, he came to Iowa, locating in Clinton county, and was united in marriage to Harriet Jenkins Nov. 6, 1873. There were engaged in farming until the year 1909 when they moved to Maquoketa.
To this union were born two children, Bruce A. and Nell, both of this city. Besides his wife and children he leaves on granddaughter, Helen Dice Kinrade, and one brother, Richard P. Dice of near Maquoketa, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held at the home on West Platt street Friday afternoon at 2 p.m., Rev. Sinden officiating, and burial at Union cemetery.
