ANOTHER CIVIL WAR VETERAN IS MUSTERED OUT
After an illness of several month, James Miller, one of our honored citizens and civil war veterans, passed away at his home on North Second street in this city at noon Tuesday Aug. 18. Born in Seneca county, New York, in 1846, where he spent his boy-hood, he enlisted with the Union colors in early manhood, being a member of Company F, 197th Ohio Infantry, with which organization he served with honor. On February 17, 1871, he was united in marriage to Jennie Gifford of Madison, Ohio, at Springfield, Pa., and in 1888 they came to Iowa, settling on a farm east of town where they resided until sixteen years ago, then moving to this city which has since been home.
Mr. Miller was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and A.W. Drips Post G.A.R., and his citizenship in the community has been highly honorable and his loyalty to it has been pronounced. His devoted companion in life passed away about two years ago, since which time he had been with his children, who will keenly miss a kind father. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Bert Isbell of this city, Mrs. Will Taylor of Savanna, Mrs. Willis Berryman of Stanley, Iowa, and one son Elvin of near Maquoketa, and also four grandchildren.
The funeral was held from the late home Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. F.C. Worcester of the M. E. church officiating, with interment in Mt. Hope cemetery.
