Leonard M. Beauchamp, 56, died Thursday(December 20, 1979) at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, following surgery. The flamboyant western Jackson County man added a flair. Beauchamp, the tireless promoter of recreation and business in the Canton area is perhaps best remembered as the man who won an unexpected Democratic primary victory over incumbent supervisor Alfred Ehl in 1978. Beauchamp later lost to Republican Marshalline Lamborn in the general election.
Beauchamp operated the Longbranch Saloon at Canton along with a number of other business interests which included the Hurst Hotel. He bought the old landmark earlier this year and had high hopes about renovating the structure.
The Canton man was a veteran of World War Two and was active in both the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.
On the campaign trail Beauchamp recounted that while he 'wanted to win, he was going to have fun either way'. That included passing out one dollar bills to children. He had a special place in his heart for little girls.
The ever present cigar and the next project he hoped to see develop were trademarks of the gregarious Beauchamp. Beauchamp never tired of extolling the virtues of Jackson County and the vacation mecca he saw the county becoming. In numerous contacts with the Maquoketa Newspapers, Beauchamp always urged more coverage of outdoor recreation.
The funeral for Leonard M. Beauchamp, 56, RR1, Monmouth, is pending at the Haylock-O'Hara Funeral Home, Maquoketa. Mr. Beauchamp died Thursday, December 20, at Mercy Hospital, Dubuque.
Leonard Beauchamp was born April 10, 1923, in Bernard to John and Eleanor Johnson Beauchamp. He married Joyce Schmeider on Sept 28, 1948, in Keiler, Wisconsin. He was a World War II veteran and a member of the VFW and American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Steven (Carmen) Streets, Wyoming, Brenda Bentley, Onslow and Mrs. Marvin O. (Sheila) Anderson, a son, Mark, with the Air Force in Iceland, seven grandchildren, two brothers, Eldon and Loras, both of Dubuque, three sisters, Mrs. John (Pauline) White, Cedar Rapids, Mrs. John (Mary) Mullin, Dubuque and Mrs. Bernard (Betty) Mullady, Dubuque. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Marsha.
