Navy Doctor, Former Bernard Man, Is Killed.
Bernard, Oct. 25, 1962.
A Dubuque Navy doctor, who died Oct. 6 following a helicopter crash in South Viet Nam, lived near here until 1950, when he moved to Dubuque.
Lt. Gerald C. Griffin, 28, was the son of the late Charles Griffin and Mrs. Mary Griffin. He was fatally injured while on a mission against Communist guerillas. The crash site was a jungle mountain region. Seven of the eight men involved in the crash died.
The helicopter in which Lt. Griffin was a passenger was one of 20 from the U.S.Marine Corps 163rd squadron which participated in an early morning troop support operation. Although a Navy doctor, Griffin has been assigned to the Marines for the operations in South Viet Nam.
Lt. Griffin's remains were returned to Dubuque, where last rites were held Monday at St. Patrick's Church. Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Baldwin, Iowa.
Lt. Griffin was born at Wyoming, Iowa and in 1959 received his doctor of medicine degree from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He interned at the Oakland, California, Naval Hospital.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by one brother, Anthony, and one sister, Miss Mary Rita Griffin, both of River Forest, Illinois.
