MAQUOKETA — Dr. Marvin A. “Doc” Dalchow, 96, of Maquoketa, died Thursday at Jackson County Regional Health Center, Maquoketa.

Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa.

He was born Jan. 10, 1911, in Lyons to Reinhart and Agnes Leinbaugh Dalchow. He married Viola Tinnefeld on Aug. 30, 1932, in Aledo, Ill.

He graduated from Lost Nation High School in 1929. He graduated from the University of Iowa with his D.D.S. degree in 1934 and a M.S. in orthodontia and oral surgery in 1935.

He practiced dentistry in Maquoketa until he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in August of 1942.

After he was honorably discharged, he returned to Maquoketa and resumed his dental practice. He was joined by his son-in-law in 1955 and the business was named Richeal-Dalchow Family Dentistry. He served as a dentist for more than 40 years before retiring in 1979.

He was involved with Iowa Children’s Family Services, Maquoketa Chamber of Commerce, Jackson County Historical Society, Maquoketa Jaycees, Salvation Army, American Legion, Jackson County Conservation Board, Iowa Natural Resources Council, Lion’s Club, Izaak Walton League, Boy Scouts of America, Maquoketa Rifle Club, National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited, etc.

He helped form Maquoketa State Bank and served as its first president in 1958. He also was one of the founders of the United Livestock Auction. As chairman of the Jackson County Conservation Board, he helped raise funds for the restoration of the Hurstville Lime Kilns.

After retiring, he planted thousands of trees in Jackson County and helped establish numerous wildlife habitats.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Maquoketa, for more than 70 years.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Mardonna (Dr. Marv) Richeal of DeWitt and Christine (David) Owen of Solon; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Gladys Luett of Lost Nation.

Memorials may be made to Friends of Jackson County Conservation Endowment Fund.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son and one brother.
