William Doty was born in Ontario, Canada, November 15, 1825, and died Feb. 24, 1905. He moved with his parents when quite young to New York state, and resided here until he was near manhood, when they moved to Montrose, Lee County, Iowa. In the year 1852 he was married to Miss Barbary Cankel, in Van Buren County, Iowa, who died Jan. 17, 1868. To this union was born six children, three dying in infancy. The three surviving are Mrs. R.H.Buchner, George W. Doty, and Mrs. Edgar Pyatt of Moulton, Iowa. He was again married in 1872 to Miss Emsy Odell, of Henry County, Iowa, who yet survives. To this union was born eleven children, two dying in infancy, nine yet surviving as follows: Mrs. Grace Fairbrother of Lincoln, Neb.; Mrs. Emma Hubbe and Mrs. Peter Frances of Davenport, Ia; Peter Doty of Southern Missouri; David, Daniel, Cleveland, Lee and Miss Jesse Doty live in and near Maquoketa. He also leaves one brother, John Doty of Montrose, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. Hannah Roundy of Butte, Montana. There is also fourteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren now living. Mr. Doty served three years in the Civil War, and took an active part in thirtytwo general engagements, besides endless skirmishes. Although he escaped the enemy's bullets, he lost the sight of one eye from exposure and disease while in service, but declined discharge and served to the end with his comrades in arms. But few of the soldiers and not one officer survived to return home with his command. He answered the final roll call at the age of 80 years, 3 months and 9 days. The Rev. Turner conducted the funeral services and he was laid to rest in Mt. Hope Cemetery followed by a large number of relatives and friends and a goodly number of old soldiers who conducted their last sad and impressive rights over the remains at the grave. Peace be to his ashes. Jackson Sentinel, March 1, 1905.
