MAQUOKETA — John Elliot “J.E.” Goodenow, 91, of Maquoketa, died Tuesday at Clover Ridge Place, Maquoketa.

Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, at a later date.

He was born Oct. 2, 1915, in Maquoketa to John Elliot and Myrta Irene King Goodenow. He married Maxine Lucile Sagers on Aug. 24, 1940, in West Union.

He was a 1933 graduate of Maquoketa High School. He then attended Maquoketa Junior College for two years and graduated from the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts in 1937. He then attended the University of Iowa Law College where he was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. He graduated in 1939.

After graduation, he practiced law in Oelwein for four years while associated with the county attorney. He then practiced law in Maquoketa and Preston before retiring in 1987.

He served as the Preston city attorney for many years and for Maquoketa from 1960 to 1975. He also was attorney and secretary with the Timber City Industrial board of directors from 1970 to 1987. He was secretary of the Mount Hope Cemetery Association from 1946 to 1997 and president of the Iowa Title and Guaranty Abstract Co., which he founded in 1949.

He was a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows Lodge, Izaak Walton League, Iowa State and Jackson County bar associations and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his wife; children, John Elliot “Jack” Goodenow of Maquoketa and Marla Irene (Dr. Lynn) Koob of Rice Lake, Wis.; one sister, Dorothy Duer of Rice Lake; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
