A general memorial fund has been established in Rosella’s memory.

Tootie was born in the Green Island bottoms. She became a local legend, known for her hunting skills and her love of wildlife and the great outdoors. She was nationally recognized in 1969 when she became the first women in the state of Iowa to legally tag a deer. She was an amazing woman who lived life to the fullest, always teaching those around her how precious life was. Every moment around her was an adventure full of fun. She taught us to appreciate and to see things in nature no one else could see, like a newborn deer under brush in the forest or a rabbit hidden in the snow. She even found and nurtured a baby deer to adulthood nicknamed “Rudy”.

Tootie would always drop everything she was doing to visit with anyone and they wouldn’t get out of her house without a three course meal. She would take any person or animal under her wing and they would thrive. She enjoyed hunting, cooking, gardening but most importantly she loved spending time with her family. Tootie married Arnie on May 5, 1934. Their proudest accomplishment was raising their son, Verlyn, and helping to raise their six grandchildren.

On her last day on Earth, Dr. James Cahill said it best - “she’s a grand lady, now very fragile and frail, but yet always a fighter.”

Rosella is survived by her daughter-in-law, Fern Ackermann of Bellevue, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Gladys Daniels of Miles, Iowa and Elsie Ackermann of Iowa City, Iowa; six grandchildren, Bonnie (Terry) Reuter of Spragueville, Iowa, Carla (Dan) Beck of Preston, Iowa, Gary (Linda) Ackermann of Bellevue, Iowa, Lisa (Dave)Behr of Winchester, Virginia, Dr. Mark (Shelley) Ackermann of Ankeny, Iowa and James Ackermann of Eldridge, Iowa; sixteen great-grandchildren; eleven great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom she loved as if they were her own grandchildren.

Rosella is preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; one son, Verlyn; two sisters, Nellie and Avelda; and four brothers, Leslie, Melvin, Howard and Wilbert.

Tootie - we love you, your passion and love of life will be missed by all.
