The golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Oake, was celebrated at the home of their son, Wm. R. Oake, in Sabula last week Wednesday. Some 160 friends and relatives were present and it was an unusually interesting social occasion, is beside four generations of the Oake family there were also present many old settlers. Dr. J.F.H. Sugg was master of ceremonies and made remarks appropriate to the occasion in presentation of a number of gifts and gold. To which Rev. Geo. Oake, a son of the recipient, made response. The Gazette in speaking of the aged couple says:
"Of the principles of this mention, Mr. William Oake was born in Dullingham, Cambridgeshire, Eng., June 30th, 1813: the bride, Miss Mary Riches, was born at Kiddlesworth, Northrup [should be Riddlesworth, Norfolk], Eng., May 21, 1814. They were united in marriage at Dullingham, on the 23d day of November, 1837 - the year that Victoria was proclaimed Queen of the United Kingdom. They remain at their native home until May, 1852, when they embarked for the United States, arriving at Sabula on the 30th day of July, 1852. With the exception of a few years, during which Mr. Oake owned and operated a farm in Clinton county, they have been residents of this city. They have five children living, all of whom, Mrs. Nancy Amsbaugh, of Dunlap, Kansas; Mrs. Chas. Briggs and Mrs. Jerry Sterling, of this city, Rev. George Oake, of Canton, Dak., and W.R. Oake, of this place, were present at the feast. There were also present eighteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren - seven grand and seven great grandchildren not being with them.
"Mr. and Mrs. Oake, although 74 and 73 years of age, are still, to all appearances, hale and hearty, and find no difficulty in attending to the regular duties of life." – 1 Dec 1887, Jackson Sentinel, Maquoketa, Iowa, pg 5.
